Start your day immersed in classical Chinese beauty. Yu Garden (Yuyuan) is a stunning 16th-century Ming Dynasty garden with pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and dragon-lined walls.
・Explore: Wander through the adjacent Yuyuan Bazaar, a lively marketplace with traditional architecture. It's perfect for souvenirs and photos. Try a famous Nanxiang Steamed Bun (Xiaolongbao) from the restaurant there (be prepared for a queue!).
・Take a short taxi ride to the heart of the former French Concession. This area is known for its tree-lined avenues, charming boutiques, and historic architecture.
・Stroll Down Tianzifang: This is our top recommendation. A labyrinth of narrow alleyways filled with art galleries, craft shops, quirky cafes, and boutiques. It's more intimate and artsy than the larger Xintiandi area.
・(Alternative: Xintiandi, which is more upscale and polished, with restored shikumen houses hosting restaurants and bars.)
・Enjoy lunch in the French Concession. You can find everything from international cuisine in Xintiandi to local xiaochi (small eats) in Tianzifang. For a classic Shanghai taste, look for a restaurant serving Shanghai Fried Noodles or Braised Pork (Hongshao Rou).
・Take a taxi from the French Concession to the Lujiazui area in Pudong. As you cross the river, watch the skyline emerge – it's a breathtaking sight.
・You have three fantastic options (choose one to save time and money):
1、Shanghai World Financial Center (The "Bottle Opener"): Home to the world's highest observation deck with a glass floor. The views are unparalleled.
2、Shanghai Tower: The tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. Its observation deck offers a dizzying, panoramic view of the entire city, including a bird's-eye view of the other two skyscrapers.
3、Jin Mao Tower: A classic with beautiful, traditional Chinese-inspired architecture. The view from its 88th floor is still spectacular and it's usually slightly less expensive.
・Take the Shanghai Sightseeing Tunnel (a quirky, light-show experience under the river) or a short taxi ride back to Puxi to reach The Bund (Waitan).
・Walk the Bund: Stroll along the famous waterfront promenade. On one side, you have the historic architecture of the old banks and customs houses (the "Gallery of World Architecture"). On the other, you have the futuristic skyline of Pudong. This is the iconic Shanghai view.
・The Bund offers everything from ultra-luxurious restaurants to more affordable options in the side streets. This is a great area to find a meal with a view.
・As darkness falls, the buildings on both sides of the river light up in a spectacular light show. The view of illuminated Pudong from The Bund is a must-see.
