Sapa - ideal destination for re-visiting Vietnam!

June 8th, 2006

sapa.jpgIf you have “been there an done that” in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Danang, Hoi An, Hue in Vietnam - why not consider going to Sapa on this trip??

Magnificent scenery, diverse mix of ethnic cultures and pleasant weather are one of the reasons why a visit to Sapa (the former retreat of the French until 1954) - a town nestled in the hills 38 kms. from the provincial heart of Lao Cai Pronvince in Vietnam is a must!

This exotic highland town of Sapa is best visited in the summer season with average temperature between 18-23 degrees celcius. During the monsoon months (May-August), it rains heavily while in winter, thick fog envelops the town and the mercury can drop below zero, with occasional snow up theĀ  mountains!

The best place to feel the pulse of the town is the main square, the seat of a century-old church that is always busy conducting marriages, funerals and holding baptisms for the new born babies. After dark, the church compound is full of tribal people selling home-made souvenirs, mostly bracelets and embroidered clothes and hats. The carnival-like atmosphere brings together a broad mix of ethnic cultures that cannot be found in any modern-day Vietnam. There are open air food stalls that draw even the most discerning foreign visitors.

Another “MUST SEE” attraction in Sapa is “Bac Ha“, a village market about 80 kms. from Sapa. Every Sundays, Bac Ha hosts a bazaar that attracts buyers and sellers, usually tribal villages residing in the mountains. This is a truly magnificent scene which again - cannot be found in any modern-day Vietnam.
